In the period around 1600 France was bordered in the North by the Spanish Netherlands. Today it borders Belgium, but the Kingdom of Belgium has only existed since 1831, before that it was a part of the Netherlands.
Until 1668 the border between France and the Spanish Netherlands was south of Valenciennes . At that time, the city belonged to the Hainaut (German: Hainaut). Under Louis XIV (1643-1715), the border ran north of Valenciennes after 1668. From then on, the city belonged to the „Department du Nord“ in France. It is located about 30 km south of the now Belgian town Tournai and about 30 km west of the now Belgian town Mons.
When in the 1st generation under 1st Jean Rapareillet it is called „North France“ in many records and archives, this refers to the situation today or after 1668. If it is called Valenciennes, Hainaut, Belgium, Hainaut refers to the belonging at that time, so instead of Belgium it must be Spanish Netherlands.

Today it is the last French town before crossing the border into Belgium.
About the spelling of the names:
The name Trico or that of her husband is either French, i.e. Cataline Tricault, or as Walloons in the Dutch form Catherine (Catherina) Jeronimus Trico, or Georges in French, Joris in Dutch or George in English.
The marriage-intention registry, dated January 13, 1624, in the Walloom Church in Amsterdam reads as follows: „Joris Raparlie, born in Valenchie, Borat worker, age 19, living at the Waelepadt and Catherina Trico, born in Pris, Walslant, assisted by Mary Flamegh, her sister, living in the Vles, ages 18 years.“
They were married on the 21 January 1624 and sailed four days later for America.
The dates of 13 January and 21 January indicate that the usual period of two weeks for the notice of the intended marriage had to be shortened to one week so that the young couple could board the ship in time, which departed four days later.
The place of birth Pris is incorrectly given as Paris in some documents, it must be called Pris. The village is now called Pry and is located about 60 km east of Valenciennes and 15 km northeast of Philipville and has a railway station.
In the former Catholic church in Valenciennes, St. Nicholas, there are no longer any religious acts, but the church room serves as a warehouse, which my grandfather could not enter on his return journey from Calais.
